Best British drivers to date
Racing has always been big in Britain. The country has produced many Formula 1 stars over the years. It is tempting to look at the best British drivers to date. One of them, at least, is familiar to everyone. But the other greats of the past will probably ring in your memory. It is fun to go through them and see how the country developed into a racing country.
1 Lewis Hamilton
Of course, it is not hard to imagine that Lewis Hamilton is the best British driver to date. In fact, he is widely regarded as the best driver ever. Anyone filling in a bet at a no account casino will probably think of Hamilton first at any race. So that also says something about the qualities he has. Whatever the race, he is always one of the main favourites to go for. This is partly due to the many victories and titles he has accumulated over the years.
2 Nigel Mansell
A driver that many people probably remember as well is Nigel Mansell. He was the main rival of German super-champion Michael Schumacher in the early 1990s. Mansell himself was also good for several titles and many victories. Statistically, he is the best after the untouchable Lewis Hamilton. After all these years, all the Brits who have been in the car since then have not been able to come even close to what Mansell achieved in the years he was active. That also says something about the skills he had.
3 Jackie Stewart
For many, Jackie Stewart will go down as the godfather of British racing. In the glory years of the sport Stewart was one of the most important names in the sport. With his many victories he can certainly compete with the likes of Mansell. Moreover, he still has little to fear from most youngsters who, to this day, try to build up a resume like Stewart's in the sport. It remains to be seen whether there will be drivers in the future who will succeed in doing so.
4 Jim Clarke
Jim Clarke is the man who put racing on the map in the country. Already in the 1960s Clarke was a big man. For example, he won the world title for the first time back in 1963. At that time, it was not at all common to come so far in racing. This was reserved for a select group of very special men who were good at driving. It is therefore fair to say that Clarke was a figure who really made racing a sport that received attention in England.
5 Damon Hill
Between Lewis Hamilton's and Nigel Mansell's time, several drivers tried to uphold the British honour. Jenson Button came pretty close. However, the man who did it best was Damon Hill. As son of Graham Hill he had a good basis. His father is also in the top 10 when we look further. His son Damon was even better and won many prizes in the sport in the 1990s. He is still one of the best Britons behind the wheel of all time.
